Two licences to check, not one

A LoRA does not run on its own. It sits on top of a base model, so there are two licences: the LoRA's own, and the base model's. If either is non-commercial, the combination is non-commercial. Skip this and you end up reasoning "the LoRA says commercial use is fine, so we are covered." HuggingFace returns the licence name for FLUX.1-dev as flux-1-dev-non-commercial-license. The name says it. The LICENSE.md itself sits behind a gate and cannot be read without logging in; the name can.

We counted 312 of them

Rather than trusting the impression, we counted with the CivitAI API. Five search terms (car, automobile, vehicle, train, locomotive), three sort orders, duplicates removed: 312 LoRAs, of which 182 carry a commercial-use flag. Split by year of publication, the FLUX share runs 0% in 2023, 7% in 2024, 26% in 2025 and 6% in 2026, while SDXL-family runs 9%, 66%, 69% and 81%. Among the 30 most-downloaded, SDXL-family accounts for 18, SD1.5 for 9, other for 3 — and FLUX for none at all.

The first page of search results is not the population

Our first draft of this article said "every good-looking LoRA is FLUX and unusable." Four of them happened to be FLUX. We had written the conclusion before counting, so the ledger and the workshop deck needed correcting too. Anyone can repeat the count: pass types=LORA and a search term to /api/v1/models, then tabulate allowCommercialUse against modelVersions[0].baseModel.

The trap was real, and we walked into it ourselves

So was the FLUX concern pointless? No — we were the ones who got caught. Betamina-LoRA-AnimagineXL4 is openrail-m on top of Animagine XL 4.0, which is openrail++ and commercially usable. But Betamina-flux-lora and deltamon-flux-lora sit on FLUX.1-dev. We trained them, we hold the rights, and we still cannot put them on a paid pod. Betamina-flux-lora is openrail-m on its own terms and it does not help, because running it requires FLUX.1-dev. Nobody was careless here: at training time there was no reason to care. It only bites when the thing goes on sale. A non-commercial base cannot be made commercial after the fact — you retrain.

Trademark is a separate problem from licensing

One LoRA we found carries the name of a real car manufacturer. Its licence is openrail-m, so mechanically it is cleared for commercial use. We still will not use it. What a licence permits and what a trademark permits are different questions, and putting a real brand's design language into a demo for an advertising agency is simply poor judgement. The flags a machine returns speak only about licensing. Trademark, likeness and design rights are yours to check.

One more thing: do not search in Japanese

Searching CivitAI for the Japanese word for automobile returns almost no industrial design in the top 20 — it returns characters from a series about vending machines. The Japanese word for train is worse. Japanese tags are bound tightly to Japanese-language character work. To find industrial design you have to search in English. That accounts for half the reason we only found four LoRAs at first.

What we ended up with

Redefining the requirement as "commercial use permitted including the base model", we picked Custom Vehicle for car exteriors, traincabin_XL for train interiors, Vintage steam locomotive, and our own AICU/Betamina, AnimagineXL4 edition. All SDXL-family. This was not a compromise. Having counted, SDXL-family is where car and train LoRAs actually are. We did not give up on FLUX and settle for SDXL; what we were looking for was in SDXL all along. We ran all four on ComfyPods to confirm they work.

Takeaways

Check two licences, the LoRA's and the base model's; if either is non-commercial, so is the combination. "All the good ones are FLUX" was an assumption — measured, the FLUX share of car and train LoRAs fell from 26% in 2025 to 6% in 2026, and is zero among the 30 most-downloaded. Two of our own LoRAs were caught anyway, and a non-commercial base cannot be made commercial later. Trademark is a separate matter that no flag will tell you about. Search CivitAI in English. And count the population before you write the conclusion.
